Directions
There are two major highways that pass through Erlangen. The A3 runs northwest/southeast between Würzburg and Regensburg while the A73 runs north/south between Bamberg and Nuremberg (Nürnberg).
A3:
Exit the highway at “Erlangen-Tennenlohe” in direction Erlangen (Bundesstraße B4). Then exit the B4 at “Gräfenberg/Universität-Südgelände” and turn left onto Kurt-Schumacher-Straße. Keep straight, then pass Cauerstraße and turn left at the next street Erwin-Rommel-Straße. The Physical Chemistry building is approximately 50 m ahead on the left.
A73:
Exit the highway at “Erlangen-Bruck”. Turn right in direction Gräfenberg (Bundesstraße B4) onto Paul-Gossen-Straße which will turn into the B4. After a little more than 3 km exit B4 at “Gräfenberg/Universität-Südgelände” and turn left onto Kurt-Schumacher-Straße. Keep straight, then Pass Cauerstraße and turn left at the next street Erwin-Rommel-Straße. The Physical Chemistry building is approximately 50 m ahead on the left.
You may park your car at different car parks in vicinity to Physical Chemistry (marked with “P”) or along the Erwin-Rommel-Straße or Egerlandstraße.
Tickets for the German train system can be purchased at the station just before departure, but during peak hours and holidays a ticket and seat reservation ahead of time is recommended. From the train station you can take a 10 to 15 minute taxi ride for 20-25 € or a 15 to 20 minute bus ride for approximately 3 €.
The School of Sciences, including the Physical Chemistry building, as well as the School of Engineering is serviced by busses 287 and 295.
Bus 287:
To reach the bus stop for bus 287 exit the train station to the east through the main entrance. The stop “Hauptbahnhof” is directly in front of the station, which is in the middle of the bus 287 loop. Usually several busses serve the line 287 at the same time at an interval of 15-20 minutes (during the week). The final bus stop towards the eastern suburbs of Erlangen is “Sebaldussiedlung”. You need to get off one stop earlier at bus stop “Technische Fakultät”, which is directly in front of the Physical Chemistry building.
Bus 295:
To reach the bus stop for bus 295 exit the train station to the east through the main entrance. The stop “Hauptbahnhof” is directly in front of the station either. Usually several busses serve the line 295 at the same time at an interval of 15-30 minutes (during the week). The final bus stop in southern direction is in Tennenlohe. To go to Physical Chemistry, exit at bus stop “Erlangen Süd”. The bus stop “Erlangen Süd” is located 500 m south of the chair. From here you have to walk up the Egerlandstraße to our chair (it should require about 5 min.). The Physical Chemistry building is at the end of Egerlandstraße on the right.
The closest airport to Erlangen is the Nuremberg Airport. You can also fly to Munich or Frankfurt Airport and take a train to Erlangen. The train will take approximately 1.5 hours from Munich, or 3 hours from Frankfurt. Return tickets for weekdays range from 140 to 150 € (flexible fare tickets), but discounts are available if the tickets are bought one to several weeks in advance or if the tickets are only valid for specific trains (without flexibility).
From the Nuremberg airport you can go by taxi or by bus. A taxi will take approximately 20 to 30 minutes and cost 35 to 40 €. Going by bus can take up to 40 minutes and will cost between 3 and 5 € (ticket price level 3 required).
From the airport, take bus line 30 (towards “Erlangen Hugenottenplatz”) and exit at bus stop “Erlangen Süd”. The bus stop “Erlangen Süd” is located 500 m south of the chair. From here you have to walk up the Egerlandstraße to our chair (it should require about 5 min.). The Physical Chemistry building is at the end of Egerlandstraße on the right. Alternatively, you can take bus line 33 (towards “Fürth Hauptbahnhof”) to the bus stop “Am Wegfeld”. There you change to bus line 20 (towards “Erlangen Arcaden/Hugenottenplatz”). Bus line 20 will take you to the Physical Chemistry building if you get off at the bus stop “Erlangen Technische Fakultät”. From there you can reach the Physical Chemistry building on foot (about 150 m, approx. 2 min.) directly via the “Roter Platz”.
